Wakeboard Church

Anybody that loves the Lord and frequents the lake has had that moment where you have to stop and take it all in. If you’re a believer and a hard core wakeboarder, a fisher, a sailor, or whatever—the chances are that you have had an encounter with the Lord out on the water. For many involved in water sports the water is a place where one can connect with the Lord. Sometimes that is a quiet morning on the lake all alone and sometimes that is a night with friends and other believers surrounding you in the presence of the Lord. No matter what the scenario, for many the lake is that quite place where one can feel God's presence.

The concept of Wakeboard Church was developed by Alf Evans after watching a video by Stephen Baldwin called "Living It."  Someone in the video mentioned a thing called Skate Church. It sparked an idea for how people could come together who share a love of Jesus and a love for wakeboarding. Soon thereafter, the first official Wakeboard Church meeting happened on August 17th, 2005.

The original concept was simple—just go ride and have a small Bible study and pray together. God works in a lot of simple ways—because that’s what we’re doing still today—going out once a week, riding together, reading the Bible together and praying together. Wakeboard church started out at Grapevine Lake and by God’s grace there have been more than 5 WBC chapters added to date. Our prayer is that God will use this ministry as an instrument to show people that Jesus loves them. Simply put, we are a group of individuals banned together under three common principles. We love God, love each other, and love wakeboarding.

Matthew 14:32,33 – And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying. “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Alf Evans

Alf Evans learned to waterski from his Dad when he was very young. His dad taught him to slalom ski at the age of 12 behind a 13ft tri-hull with a 50 hp outboard. His love for something behind a boat grew as he attended a camp at Lake Murray Oklahoma where he developed an affinity for kneeboarding and barefooting off the boom. It wasn’t until high school that Alf tried his first wakeboard. One of his closest friends Jamie Phillips bought the boats first wakeboard…an O’brien Shredder. Alf did not love wakeboarding at first. As a matter of fact he didn’t really begin to ride until Jamie started to get all the attention from the girls by grabbing a tweaked method. Alf began wakeboarding after that.

He rode in a few contests in his early 20’s and enjoyed that until he suffered a blown knee. That kept him off the water for a couple of years, and the fight to be the rider that he once was has always plagued him. During the chase to become that rider again he found the rider that he is now. Like any wakeboarder, he’s not totally pleased with the rider that he is, but still loves the sport and will ride until he can’t.

Alf got his BA in religious education from Missouri Baptist University and served as a youth pastor and worship minister in St. Louis for 6 years. God directed Alf and his family to move back to Texas to begin the next great adventure—little did they know it would be Wakeboard Church. Alf now works full-time in the Wakeboard Church ministry—serving as President. He remains passionately diligent to the ministry along with the continual support from his wife Kelly, his son Trey and his daughter Shafer.
